My personal essay:
My family originates from Nayarit, Mexico. A few years after they had my brother my parents left everything behind to cross the border for a better future for their family. My dad came first, and then my mom came a few months later, when my brother Jordan was the age of two. Three years after coming they had me, and seven years after me came my little sister Karen. I grew up close with a lot of my cousins and my best friend Amy who is 15 days younger. My brother has always been one of my role models.
When I was in about 3rd or 4th grade, my brother decided to join wrestling. I admired his skill, passion, and dedication towards the sport and I decided when I got older I was going to join a sport and be dedicated and amazing at it just like he was with wrestling.

When I got to 8th grade I decided to try out for cheer. My middle school didn't take cheer seriously. It was all annoying sideline cheers and everybody took it as a joke. By the time high school tryouts came I was scared to try out because I lacked ability in jumps, tumbling and, stunting. The only thing I actually knew how to do was sideline cheer and to be honest, I wasn't even that good at that. My middle school coach encouraged me to try out anyways, so after meeting the high school coach Danny, I decided to take coach Smith's advice and try out. I ended up making the JV team for football season in the fall. For basketball season in winter we got a new coach and by default he and his assistant coach decided to move me up to varsity. However, for the upcoming year I will be varsity. Not by default like last time, but because I've finally worked my way up to it.
I think the hardest part in cheer is the dedication and trust you have to have in your team. If I don't trust my bases to catch me then the stunt wont go up. If I don't dedicate myself to do something then it's like putting the whole team down. You have to be brave, all the mind blocks and fears you have can't get in the way. To me cheer is a sport and more. I’ve learned so many things like leadership, hard work and dedication. Most importantly I learned teamwork. My team is like my family and thanks to my brother I realized how great sports and other activities can be. I’ve made so many friends and memories I will never forget.
My family and friends have always supported me as a cheerleader. My mom and dad might complain when I ask one of them to drive me to the stadium or when I ask him to pick me up from practice and all I hear is a groan on the other end of the line. But I know she and my dad support me being a cheerleader and dedicating my time to a sport. I feel like just like my brother has inspired me to do a sport of some sort, I have inspired my little sister. She is always talking about how she wants to be a cheerleader when she gets older. And it's a pleasure being her role model and knowing that she looks up to me, just like I look up to my brother.
